Fashion is about clothes - style is about the wearer
Fashion isn't style - but it is what you use to reflect your personal style. It's key to add in some on trend pieces each season to keep it current, but your fashion choices need to work with your style otherwise they will look and feel wrong.
Which is why, as a stylist, I'm all about identifying your unique style first when helping you choose what to wear, put great outfits together and fill the gaps in your wardrobe so you can create a wardrobe that really represents you.
In a nutshell - it's one of the most inspiring and clarifying things you can do if you want to:
You are probably unclear on your personal style if:
If you want to hone in on your true style in the sea of options out there try this fun exercise to work out your style essence and help you to own your style.
Think of words that describe who you are deep down and what you want to project:
creative, modern, feminine, elegant, upbeat, practical, bold, relaxed, sporty, smart, youthful, vibrant, romantic, urban, interesting, edgy, street, professional, natural, rocker, bohemian, bold, minimalistic, classic, retro, fun loving, mature, chic, down to earth, timeless, artistic, colourful, avantegarde, modern, delicate, practical, androgynous, detailed, original, simple.
and so on - feel free to add your own
Creating a favourites board on pinterest and saving only outfits that you really love, or even going old school with magazines and scissors can really help with this.
Don't overthink it or be like "that would never work on me" - just save those you love, there is method to the madness!
Now sit back and analyse, you will likely see a theme or 5 emerging - what does that theme say? Relaxed, quirky, effortless , ethereal? or are some of them reminiscent of a certain decade 70's hustle or boho anyone? Whatever words come, (and they may be some I've listed above), jot them down.
Hone it to 4 to 6 words that resonate with you, make you feel good saying them out loud, and are something you would love to portray through your clothes and wardrobe because they mean something to you.
Keep in mind, we all have different facets, moods and parts of our lifestyle so they can be really contrasting it really doesn't matter as long as they speak to you personally.
Write them on a card, post it note or the back of your hand! I don't mind! as long as you keep them handy - because these are these are your "style words" and are about to make your life easy - well the getting dressed part at least!
Now dive into your wardrobe and find the pieces that reflect these words - create new outfits, shop to fill the gaps but always with your style words in mind.
Chances are those things you don't wear don't reflect these words and so aren't really doing it for you "it" being representing the real you, or else they may work but need some friends to hang out with to create an actual outfit.
I believe there are always ways to wear a style that will suit you - it may not be exactly as depicted on the size 6 model on the image you saved, but believe me there will be a way to reflect the style you want to and, even better, give it your twist.
Have fun with this and remember your style is an evolving process.
I'd love to know in the comments what your style words are this spring/summer.
